Caring and sharing

Karen writes...

Going up late to clean the hide one day recently proved to be a really rewarding experience. Perched up in the quarry side by side were the peregrines. The male had a kill under his foot and was busily plucking it then began feeding, watched avidly by the female. It soon all got too much and she leaned forward to try and grab a bite only for him to move it a few inches away from her. Undeterred she went around to the other side so she was closer again to the food. After a few seconds watching again she stretched out a foot, grabbed hold with her talons and tried to pull the food away. The male was having none of it and kept a good grip pulling it back towards him. She reluctantly let go and resumed just watching again.

Eventually after a few minutes he left the food and her and moved to a tree stump elsewhere in the quarry and the female, happy at last, got to feed on the remains. It was absolutely brilliant to see the interaction between the birds and I did eventually get round to the cleaning up!
